1 Corinthians 15:1-4 is THE Gospel!
Who says so?
JESUS Christ, because He revealed THE Gospel to Paul!
John 3.16 can save no one today apart from Paul’s gospel. John 3.16 was the kingdom gospel in which people were to believe in the identity of Christ, that He was the Messiah, the Son of God. Such belief can save no one today. One must believe Christ has died for our sins and risen from the dead. That was not what Jesus told Nicodemus. See my articles, The Gospel, and The Gospel of the Kingdom.
Is John 3:16 THE Gospel?”
Is John 3:16 Christian?
Introduction
Probably the most well-known verse in the Bible is John 3.16. It reads,
For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.
The first principles of interpretation are 1) to examine a passage in its context and 2) to recognize that a verse may have several applications but only one interpretation. With these principles in mind, the goal of this study is to examine John 3.16. It is widely published as a statement of the way of salvation. But is it?
Jesus’ Earthly Ministry: National Repentance
The Lord Jesus Christ took on flesh and was born of Mary. As a Jew, he ministered to the nation of Israel. Paul wrote of His ministry:
For I say that Christ has become a servant to the circumcision on behalf of the truth of God to confirm the promises given to the fathers (Romans 15.8).
Jesus was a “servant of the circumcision,” the Jews. His role was “to confirm the promises to the fathers.” These promises were the covenants God had given the nation: the Abrahamic, Land, Mosaic, Sabbatic, Davidic, and New. Through covenants, best understood as promises, God told Israel what He would do for them. He promised He would bless them, give them a land, make them a nation of priests, give them an eternal king and kingdom, and write His laws on their hearts. Lastly, they would become a light and blessing to Gentiles. This was known as the prophetic or kingdom program. All these blessings depended upon Israel accepting her Messiah–the source of all blessing. None of the blessings could come apart from Him.
When Jesus began His public ministry, his herald, John the Baptist, announced Him to the nation in anticipation of the long-awaited kingdom. Matthew 3.1-3 reads:
1 Now in those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea, saying, 2 “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” 3 For this is the one referred to by Isaiah the prophet when he said, “The voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘Make ready the way of the Lord, Make His paths straight!’”
National repentance was the required condition for God to establish His kingdom (Matthew 4.17). The nation, however, refused to repent. Instead, they crucified their Messiah. As horrific and tragic as this was, hope remained. He had risen from the dead. Encouraged by this hope, Peter addressed his people:
36 Therefore let all the house of Israel know for certain that God has made Him both Lord and Christ—this Jesus whom you crucified.” 37 Now when they heard this, they were pierced to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brethren, what shall we do?” 38 Peter said to them, “Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off, as many as the Lord our God will call to Himself” (Acts 2.36-39).
Notice Peter addressed the whole nation (v. 36). He continued the message of repentance and water baptism John and Jesus had preached (v. 38). Even though Israel had crucified her Messiah, if the nation repented, the prophetic plan would be fulfilled (cf. Acts 2.14-21, 3.17-21).
Jesus’ Earthly Ministry: Individual Salvation
National repentance (all Israel, cf. Romans 11.26) was required before the Lord would return to establish His kingdom (Matthew 23.37-39; Acts 3.19-20). National repentance meant individual salvation. What did a Jew have to believe to be saved during Jesus’ earthly ministry? The answer to this question is clearly revealed in the Scriptures. One had to believe that Jesus was the Messiah, the Son of God. Matthew recorded:
15 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” 16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” 17 And Jesus said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Barjona, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven (Matthew 16.15-17).
Peter believed who Jesus was. He was saved by believing in the identity of Jesus. That was the gospel of the kingdom. We find this same belief in Martha. Following the death of Lazarus, Jesus came to comfort the family. Distraught by her brother’s death, she told the Lord that had He been present her brother would not have died. He replied Lazarus would rise again in the resurrection and that He was the resurrection and the life. Martha responded:
She said to Him, “Yes, Lord; I have believed that You are the Christ, the Son of God, even He who comes into the world” (John 11.27).
Martha believed in the identity of Jesus: He was the Messiah. He was the Son of God.
Notice too, Paul’s salvation:
3 As he was traveling, it happened that he was approaching Damascus, and suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him; 4 and he fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?” 5 And he said, “Who are You, Lord?” And He said, “I am Jesus whom you are persecuting, 6 but get up and enter the city, and it will be told you what you must do” (Acts 9.3-6).
Saul believed in the identity of Christ–that Jesus was the Messiah, the Son of God. That was his salvation. What did Saul preach following his salvation? He preached the identity of Christ:
19 Now for several days he was with the disciples who were at Damascus, 20 and immediately he began to proclaim Jesus in the synagogues, saying, “He is the Son of God” (Acts 9.19-20).
This truth is confirmed further in the following passages: John 3.18; Acts 2.21, 38, 3.6, 16, 4.7, 10, 12, 17, 18, 30, 5.28, 40-41, 8.12, 16, 9.14-15, 21, 27, 10.43, 48, 19.5, 22.16, 26.9.
Jesus and Nick
The passage in John’s gospel of Nicodemus coming to Jesus at night is familiar to almost anyone who has attended church. Nicodemus acknowledged Jesus had come from God. Jesus replied, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God” (John 3.3). From this opening ensued a conversation in which Jesus sought to give Nicodemus the understanding that to have a relationship with God required a spiritual birth, not merely a physical birth. Since Nicodemus knew the Scriptures, Jesus took him to his Bible. He declared:
14 As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up; 15 so that whoever believes will in Him have eternal life. 16 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life (John 3.14-16).
Jesus’ reference to the serpent was the account in Numbers in which God sent poisonous snakes as judgment to Israel due to their unbelief and constant complaining. Moses wrote:
6 The Lord sent fiery serpents among the people and they bit the people, so that many people of Israel died. 7 So the people came to Moses and said, “We have sinned, because we have spoken against the Lord and you; intercede with the Lord, that He may remove the serpents from us.” And Moses interceded for the people. 8 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Make a fiery serpent, and set it on a standard; and it shall come about, that everyone who is bitten, when he looks at it, he will live.” 9 And Moses made a bronze serpent and set it on the standard; and it came about, that if a serpent bit any man, when he looked to the bronze serpent, he lived (Numbers 21.6-9).
Because the people acknowledged their sin, Moses interceded for them and the Lord provided the remedy for the snake bites: a bronze serpent set on a standard (נְחַשׁ נְחֹשֶׁת, Nehushtan, caduceus). To effect the cure required faith (obedience): one had to look upon the serpent on the pole. The lesson Jesus wished Nicodemus to learn was that life came from faith (obedience). Notice that Jesus told Nicodemus that it was believing in the name of Christ that was necessary for salvation (John 3.18).
Earlier, Jesus had told Nicodemus, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit he cannot enter into the kingdom of God” (John 3.5). The water to which Jesus referred was water baptism. Under the kingdom gospel, water baptism was required for salvation as evidenced by the Scriptures (Mark 1.4, 16.16; Acts 2.38, 22.16).
Paul’s Gospel
Paul received his gospel directly from the Lord. He wrote the Galatians:
11 For I would have you know, brethren, that the gospel which was preached by me is not according to man. 12 For I neither received it from man, nor was I taught it, but I received it through a revelation of Jesus Christ (Galatians 1.11-12).
Paul’s gospel, received from the ascended Lord, was that Christ died for our sins and arose from the dead (1 Corinthians 15.1-4). This is the gospel by which we are saved today. Paul called it the “gospel of the grace of God” (Acts 20.24), “my gospel” (Romans 2.16, 16.25, 2 Timothy 2.8), the “glorious gospel” (2 Corinthians 4.4 (KJV); 1 Timothy 1.11). No record in the Scriptures exists of anyone proclaiming Christ’s death and resurrection for salvation before Paul. In Jesus’ earthly ministry and shortly thereafter, one was saved by believing the “gospel of the kingdom,” that Jesus was the Christ, the Son of God, not that Christ died for our sins and rose from the dead. We do not tell people to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God to be saved today. We tell them that to be saved one must believe Christ died for their sins and arose from the dead. Why? Because Paul is our apostle: the apostle of the Gentiles (Romans 11.13; Ephesians 3.1; 1 Timothy 2.7; 2 Timothy 1.11 (KJV)) and after the Council of Jerusalem in 51 A.D., Paul’s gospel became the only valid gospel (Acts 15.11; Galatians 1.6-9).
Conclusion: John 3.16
The passage at hand, John 3.16, was spoken by Jesus to Nicodemus, a Jew. During Jesus’ earthly ministry He proclaimed the “gospel of the kingdom.” For one to be saved under this gospel required believing who He was, the Messiah, the Son of God and water baptism. Therefore, interpretively, in context, John 3.16 is not a Christian verse. It is a Jewish verse since Jesus in His earthly ministry came to proclaim salvation to Jews, not Gentiles (Matthew 10.5-6, 15.21-24).
The other thing to notice about John 3.16 is that it says nothing about Jesus’ death or resurrection. Interpretively, in context, Jesus’ statement that “God gave His Son” did not mean He gave Him to die but to be Israel’s Savior. This is what Jesus’ words meant to Nicodemus. Only later would it be understood that Jesus came to die and rise from the dead for our salvation.
Applicationally, if one reads Paul’s gospel into the message, John 3.16 can have a legitimate Christian use. If the Lord’s words, “whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life” is presented to mean whoever believes Paul’s gospel, that Christ died for his sins and arose from the dead, has eternal life, then the passage can have a Christian sense. But it must be understood that this was not what Jesus meant when He spoke with Nicodemus.
All Scripture is beneficial for us (Romans 15.4; 1 Corinthians 10.11) but all Scripture is not to us. For clear communication, especially in proclaiming the gospel, we need to keep the message as simple as possible. We should use passages that clearly define how we are saved. These are found in Paul’s writings (1 Corinthians 15.1-4; Romans 3.21-30, 4.1-5, etc.).

JOHN 3:16 IS NOT OUR GOSPEL
ReplyDeleteJohn 3:16 was the GOSPEL under Israel's LAW programme. They did not have to believe in the DEATH, BURIAL and RESURRECTION of Christ for them to be saved. What was preached to them was the NAME of Jesus, not the CROSS.
They were promised a Messiah in the Old Testament. So they only had to believe that Jesus was the Messiah, the Son of God.
"But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that BELIEVE on his NAME." (John 1:12 KJV)
This gospel is called the GOSPEL OF THE KINGDOM. Jesus Christ preached this GOSPEL in his EARTHLY ministry to ISRAEL.
"He that BELIEVETH on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he has not believed in the NAME of the only begotten Son of God." (John 3:18 KJV)
"Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye BELIEVE on HIM whom he hath sent." (John 6:29 KJV)
"And this is the will of him that sent me, that everyone which seeth the Son, and BELIEVETH on HIM, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day." (John 6:40 KJV)
The 12 also preached this GOSPEL in Matthew, Mark, Luke, John and in the early Acts period.
"And this is his commandment, that we should BELIEVE on the NAME of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment." (1 John 3:23 KJV)
You can see from above that the GOSPEL OF THE KINGDOM was about believing in the NAME of his SON JESUS CHRIST. It was a CROSSLESS message.
Did Paul preach the same gospel as the 12? No. Paul makes it clear that he does not preach the NAME of Jesus for salvation. That Gospel was suspended when God raised Paul.
"Yes, so have strived to preach the GOSPEL, not where Christ was NAMED, lest I should build upon another man's FOUNDATION." (Romans 15:20 KJV)
Preaching the NAME of Jesus for salvation would be building upon another man's FOUNDATION. With Paul, God started a new programme, the GRACE programme. Paul was not building upon another man's FOUNDATION. He was not building on the FOUNDATION of the 12. He LAID the FOUNDATION.
"According to the GRACE of God which is given unto me, as a wise MASTERBUILDER, I have LAID the FOUNDATION, and another BUILDETH thereupon. But let every man TAKE HEED how he BUILDETH thereupon." (1 Corinthians 3:10 KJV)
The fact that Paul laid the foundation means God started a NEW programme and a NEW MESSAGE with Paul. Paul was the PATTERN of salvation for those who would be saved under GRACE. The 12 were saved under ISRAEL'S LAW programme. Paul was saved under the GRACE programme as the FIRST member of the BODY OF CHRIST.
"Howbeit for this cause I obtained MERCY, that in me FIRST Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering for a PATTERN to them which should HEREAFTER BELIEVE on him to everlasting life." (1 Timothy 1:16 KJV)
Paul DECLARED the GOSPEL that saves today in 1 Corinthians 15:1-4.
"1 Moreover, brethren, I DECLARE unto you the GOSPEL, which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand.
2 By which also ye are SAVED, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have BELIEVED in vain.
3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ DIED for our sins according to the scriptures;
4 And that he was BURIED, and that he ROSE again the third day according to the scriptures:" (1 Corinthians 15:1-4 KJV)
So for us to be saved today, we don't have to believe that Jesus is the Son of God although we know that he is the Son of God. We must BELIEVE that Christ DIED for our sins, was BURIED and ROSE again the third day for our justification (1 Corinthians 15:1-4 KJV). Our GOSPEL includes the cross and that is why Paul calls it the message of the cross. John 3:16 is not the GOSPEL for today!
Learning to rightly divide the word of truth would clear a lot of this up. 2Timothy 2:15 KJV
Grace and Peace 🙏
🔥 Get With The Program ✅🔥
ReplyDeleteMore specifically 👉 The Mystery Program! If the mystery revealed to the apostle Paul nearly 2,000 years ago is still a mystery to you, it’s time to wake up, break free from the bondage of denominational confusion and learn sound doctrine.
For the benefit of those who have not yet been informed regarding the many doctrinal differences and contradictions between the earthly ministry of Christ (for Israel) and the dispensation of God’s grace given to Paul for the Gentiles (Ephesians 3:1-2), here’s a quick breakdown of the basics.
Throughout the earthly ministry of Christ in Matthew, Mark, Luke and John (plus Acts 1-7), the people of Israel were still in their long-standing position of privilege as God’s chosen people. Only the people of “the circumcision” had access to God through the nation of Israel.
During that period of time, referred to in scripture as “Time Past,” Jesus said salvation was only for the Jews (John 4:22), and that he had been sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel (Matthew 15:24).
Salvation in Christ was not for Gentiles in Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Gentiles were lost and without God at that time (Ephesians 2:11-12).
During his earthly ministry, Jesus preached faith in him as Israel’s Messiah, the Son of God, plus maintaining works of righteousness and keeping the law of Moses for salvation. Righteousness was attained through faith + obeying the law and performing good works (Matthew 5:17-20). The imputed righteousness of God through faith alone without the law had not yet been offered.
In “Time Past,” Christ was preached to Jews only according to the fulfillment of prophecy (John 5:39-40, Acts 3:18-21). The mystery of the church the body of Christ and the dispensation of grace was still a secret hidden in God (Ephesians 3:9, Colossians 1:26).
The church the body of Christ did not yet exist. The gospel of Christ’s death, burial and resurrection for the forgiveness of sins and free gift of eternal life had not yet been preached by any man until…
🔥⚔️🛡
The mystery of Christ was revealed to Paul after his conversion in Acts 9. After Paul’s grace message had been spread amongst the Gentiles, it was revealed to all nations that < GOD HAD CREATED A BRAND NEW AND DIFFERENT PROGRAM OF SALVATION IN CHRIST > according to the revelation of the mystery (Romans 16:25) which Jesus gave to Paul by divine revelation (Galatians 1:11-12).
Paul was given a very different message of salvation by the risen and ascended Christ according to the dispensation of God’s grace that defines the “But Now” time period (Ephesians 2:13) in which we currently live today.
Consider the following changes that went into effect when the transition occurred from Israel’s law / prophecy program to the grace / mystery program that God currently has in operation today.
🔥⚔️🛡
Time Past — The circumcision (Israel) were God’s chosen people for an earthly inheritance (Matthew 5:5); Gentiles were lost and without God (Ephesians 2:11-12).
But Now — The scenario is reversed. Israel as a nation is blind and fallen (Romans 11:7-12), and believing Gentiles ( + believing Jews) are God’s chosen people (Ephesians 1:4-5) for a heavenly inheritance (Ephesians 2:6).
🔥⚔️🛡
Time Past — The gospel message for Jews only was to believe in Christ as Israel’s Messiah, the Son of God, plus maintain works of righteousness (John 15:1-6) and keep the law of Moses (Matthew 23:1-3).
But Now — That gospel message is no longer in effect today according to the dispensation of God’s grace given to Paul. Anyone who seeks to be justified by the law is fallen from grace (Galatians 5:4). Christ is become of no effect unto them.
John 3.16 The Salvation Gospel For Today? NO! If you've attended Protestant churches you have probably heard them use “John 3:16” for their salvation invitations.
ReplyDeleteJohn 3.16 — "For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever *believeth in him* should not perish, but have everlasting life."
While John’s Gospel contains many exhortations to “believe on the Lord Jesus Christ” (Jn.1.12; Jn.2.11; Jn.2.23) but what exactly did John teach them TO BELIEVE ABOUT JESUS?
John wrote a very important piece of Israel’s Scriptures. We should study the Gospel of John, and we can quote the Gospel of John during salvation messages, *BUT* we should be mindful of "its original place in God’s Holy Word is to ISRAEL ONLY."
John's Gospel was written to *LOST JEW,* to tell them that Jesus was the son of God, THEIR MESSIAH / The Christ and they could FIND SALVATION *THROUGH HIS NAME*
John 20.31 But these are written, that ye might *believe that Jesus is the Christ* the Son of God; and that believing YE MIGHT FIND LIFE *THROUGH HIS NAME*
John 2.23 Now when he was in Jerusalem at the Passover, in the feast day, many *BELIEVED ON HIS NAME* when they saw the miracles which he did.
At the pinnacle of John's prologue he says to *BELIEVE IN *JESUS NAME*, because he who believes lives.
There is actually *very little about Calvary* in the Gospel of John.
We see Jesus crucified in chapter 19 of John, but that is just one chapter and it is dedicated to the "historical event" of Calvary’s cross.
John spent most of his Gospel Record focusing on WHO JESUS WAS and how He preached and performed eight miracles to validate who He was.
Today, we are residing in what Apostle Paul coined "The Dispensation of The Grace of God,"(Eph.3.2) a *brand new dispensation* that *followed Israel's kingdom program*
Eph.3.1, 2 — For this cause I Paul, the prisoner of Jesus Christ *for you Gentiles-[non-Jews.] If ye have heard of "The Dispensation of The Grace of God" which is given me to you...
While Jesus and his disciples preached "The Kingdom Gospel" to *ISRAEL ONLY* during his earthly ministry, and a LITTLE while after,
He raised up Paul to be an apostle to the Gentiles-[non-Jews] and gave Him *The Gospel of Christ*-(Rom.1.16, 1Cor.15.1-4) to preach to us non-Jews and any Jews scattered among us.
Rom.1.1 — "Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, *called to be an apostle*, separated unto the *gospel of God*
The gospel Jesus personally gave to Paul for us is called by many different names but it contained (((Jesus' instructions for our salvation today.)))
Gal1.11-12 -But I certify you, brethren, that *the gospel* which was preached of me is *NOT AFTER MAN*. For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the (((revelation of Jesus Christ.)))
This Gospel of Christ has the power to SAVE everyone who will have faith in its message.
Rom.1.16 — "For I am not ashamed of *The Gospel of Christ*: for it is the power of God *UNTO SALVATION* to every one that *believeth*..."
~ The Gospel of Christ for Salvation ~
“… I declare unto you The Gospel… how that *Christ died for our sins* according to the scriptures; and that *he was buried*, and that *he rose again* the third day according to the scriptures.”
1 Thess. 4:14 - For *IF* we BELIEVE that **Jesus died and rose again** even so them also which sleep-[died] in Jesus will **God bring with him.**
Thus salvation is thus received today in our Grace Age by faith in Jesus Christ to save you, believing he died to pay for our sins and rose from the tomb to gift you with eternal life.
1 Corinthians 15:3-4
3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
Why Should God Accept You?
ReplyDeleteI am about to say something that at first will sound extremely hard, but will end up being very simple.
You can accept God, Jesus Christ as Lord, and the Bible as the word of God and not be saved.
Salvation is not a matter of you accepting Christianity, Christ, God, or the Bible. Salvation is given to those accepted by God. The difference is huge!
Who Must Be Accepted
You accept Christ? So, what does that have to do with your being accepted by Him? You can accept God, but why should He accept you? He is not trying to be accepted by you.
Is Christ standing in your judgment line, along with everything else you consider and evaluate to be worthy, holding his resume, and hoping that he is accepted by you?
Of course not! We are the ones standing in the judgment line of Christ. It is exactly backwards to think we must accept God, when really we need God to accept us!
The difference concerns who is the judge. Are you the judge of all things, or is God?
Our consumer driven culture has painted God as a divine politician campaigning for your vote. Political debates encourage us to decide who we deem worthy of high positions. Not so, with God. Truth is not a democracy.
God cannot be judged. The Lord Jesus Christ is not up for re-election. The Bible is not determined to be the word of God by majority vote.
The Lord is Not Trying to Be Accepted
The Lord is not trying to be accepted by anyone. The Saviour is not asking, “Is my salvation acceptable to you?” The Judge does not turn to the criminal and ask, “Do you accept my judgment?” The Truth does not beg the question, “Do you accept me to be true?”
Jesus Christ is Lord and Saviour and there is none else beside him. All men are destined to die, and we need Him to live. We need to be accepted by God. God does not count it a worthy thing to be accepted by you.
Never in the Bible does God beg men to accept him, but there are many times when men beg God to accept them.
They knew that God was the judge of all, and he must find them worthy if they are to receive righteousness, forgiveness, life, and the peace of salvation.
God is not up for re-election, we are. God is not the politician; we are the publicans begging for mercy (Luke 18:13). We have been given this mortal life, and our term will run out.
Are We Acceptable to God?
So, on what basis does God accept us?
If it is on the basis of our righteous behavior, wise choices, or love toward others, who of us could be worthy unless God grades us all on a curve? We may be esteemed among men, but would we be able to hold our own in the sight of God who knows all our secrets? Certainly not.
The Bible condemns all self-righteousness.
“There is none righteous, no, not one:” – Romans 3:10
“…by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight:…” – Romans 3:20
“…all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;”
– Romans 3:23
We must understand that we are totally unacceptable to God. We are all sinners and unworthy to be accepted by a perfectly righteous God. Even if you accept Him. He cannot accept you.
How Can God Accept Us?
Why should God be merciful and gracious to sinners? How can he be merciful to sinners?
The answer is revealed in the gospel of Jesus Christ, who shed his blood for our sins, and rose from the dead so that his righteousness could be imputed to all that believe.
When we trust in Christ’s righteous life, death, and resurrection on our behalf, then God accepts us not for our own sake, but for the sake of Jesus Christ who died for us (Rom 5:8).
Why You Can’t Be Born Again
ReplyDeleteJustin Johnson
Ever since Chuck Colson’s popular biography, being “born again” has been a mainstream euphemism for a salvation experience.
Some have used “born again” as a way to separate the devout from the nominal Christian.
Unfortunately, many believe they are saved because they have a “born again” feeling, changed life, or emotional experience and have no testimony of trusting Christ’s finished work on the cross.
When studied from the Bible rightly divided, “born again” is something that only Israel could do.
No Gentile could be born again.
Israel’s First Birth
To understand why only Israel could be born again, we must know how they were born the first time.
In Exodus, the nation of Israel was born the first time when God delivered them out of Egypt. The LORD calls the nation his firstborn son.
“And thou shalt say unto Pharaoh, Thus saith the LORD, Israel is my son, even my firstborn: And I say unto thee, Let my son go, that he may serve me…” – Exodus 4:22-23
Having been delivered and redeemed from Egypt, Israel was given the law, the Mosaic covenant, that sanctified them as a people.
Israel’s Need for a Second Birth
Over time, Israel became disobedient, and where the law was sin abounded. They were no longer bound by Egypt, but they were bound by the covenant to their sins with no way out.
As Israel’s sins grew, it was clear that merely being born a Jew into the promises and covenants of God was not able to cause them to serve the Lord.
The prophets spoke of a better covenant that would replace the old for the house of Israel (Jer 31:31). This new covenant would include the impartation of God’s Spirit to cause them to walk in his statutes (Eze 36:27).
It was this new covenant that was necessary for God to fulfill his kingdom promises to Israel.
Nicodemus and Born Again
That the prophets already spoke about Israel’s new covenant is why when Jesus spoke to Nicodemus about being born again he said:
“Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things?” – John 3:10
Nicodemus should have known that Israel had a great need and that the need was for their nation to be redeemed from their old covenant bondage to enter the kingdom God had promised them.
“Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” – John 3:3
Jesus made it clear to Nicodemus that the nation had to be born again when he said “Ye must be born again.” (John 3:7 -We know that “ye” is the plural pronoun; and “thee” the singular.)
Jesus came to Israel ministering their need for being born again through a better covenant. No longer would Israel be identified by the old covenant but by the new.
People who think they are born again must also think they are in some way Israel.
A New Creature
Only Israel could be born again because only Israel was born unto God a first time (Exo 4:22).
You can’t be born again, because you are not saved by being Israel or by Israel’s covenants.
Gentiles were strangers of the covenants and without God (Eph 2:12). Gentiles were not born into God’s covenants. Our salvation would not be a second time opportunity for us. It would be the first time salvation was offered directly to us without Israel.
Our salvation by grace is not consequent to a changed life, a Spirit unction, or a better way to obey God’s statutes.
Our salvation is not described as being born again into a second covenant, but being made alive into a new creature (Eph 2:15).
This new creature, called the Body of Christ, is neither Jewish nor Gentile, and operates not under the law (Rom 6:14; Gal 3:28).
The new creature is the subject of the mystery of Christ and could not have been known by Nicodemus, the prophets, nor any of the apostles in John 3.

Herein is the Problem…
DeleteWhen people use “born again” language to describe their salvation today, it hides the preaching of the cross, which is unique to the formation of the new creature by God’s grace.
“Born again” language takes us back to before the cross in John 3 and replaces the gospel of Christ with Israel’s new covenant.
Born again language is a denial of the mystery of Christ revealed to the apostle Paul.
People who think they are born again must also think they are in some way Israel.
Conclusion
Being born again is something for Israel to partake. Since Israel is fallen, you couldn’t be born again if you wanted to.
What you can be is saved by God’s grace through faith in his finished work on the cross. At the moment you believe, the Holy Spirit seals you in Christ making you part of a new creature.
Trusting the cross of Christ is what will save you today. Trusting your experience, devotion, or changed life will not. Being saved is far better than being born again.
